As much as you may love the ocean and warm, sun-kissed skin in the summer, the season has one little blip: You may be tempted to skip your summertime workout. In fact, fewer people sign up for workout classes in July and August compared to any other month.

Of course, this could just mean people would rather hit the pavement outside than take an indoor class when it’s nice out but it’s also easy to see why people would want to skip a workout for a beach day or barbecue.

So check out these common reasons you may use to skimp on exercise in the summertime—we’re about to call your bluff with proven tips and tricks! You can still get in your summertime workout!

You Don’t Want to Waste a Beautiful Day at the Gym
Why spend time surrounded by fluorescent lighting when the sun’s shining, right? Totally agree J, which is why you should exercise outside! Try tennis and kayaking. Or go for a hike.  Even if you are on vacation, you can find time to squeeze this in.

You Can’t Stand the Summer Heat
It’s true that you need to be extra careful when exercising under the hot sun—heat exhaustion, heat stroke, and dehydration are dangerous. But if you’re taking the right precautions, there are exercises that feel refreshing even with the higher temperatures. Wading in a pool or lake is great cardio and strength conditioning for your lower body.  Try biking! The momentum from the speed is like a natural fan blowing wind all over your body.   Just don’t forget to protect your skin with sunscreen and maybe even UPF clothing!

You’ll Be Traveling Every Weekend
Summer is peak road trip and beach season, but that doesn’t mean you can’t bring along your workout. No matter the destination, you can always work in bodyweight exercises.  I have a series of videos on YouTube that will help with this.

You Have a Very Busy Summer Social Calendar
Picnics, rooftop happy hours, movies in the park—with so many fun activities going on, there may be little room for exercise sessions. But here’s the glorious thing: You don’t need to log hours at the gym to get fit. Try any of my great quick workouts when you’re low on time, and you’ll be able to fit in your fitness and your summer fun.
